Smoky the “Yorkie Doodle Dandy” 1943-1957
Smoky served in world war 2 despite weighing only 4 pounds. Found by an American soldier in an abandon foxhole the New Guinea jungle: she was sold to Corporal William A. Wynne of Cleveland, Ohio.
Smoky Served in the South Pacific: credited with twelve combat missions and awarded eight battle stars.She survived 150 air raids on New Guinea and made it through a typhoon at Okinawa. Smoky even parachuted from 30 feet (9.1 m) in the air, out of a tree, using a parachute made just for her.
After the war Smoky returned to Cleveland with Wynne and received a fair amount of publicity; Including being featured in a page one story with photographs, in the Cleveland Press. She lived with Wynne in Cleveland till she passed. in 2005, a memorial was constructed at her grave to commemorate her service.
